What to see and what to do in Cannero Riviera

Located a few kilometers from the Swiss border, Cannero Riviera develops near the Cannero stream, on the Piedmontese shore of Lake Maggiore, with a view of the picturesque castles that take their name from it.

A fertile territory and a mild climate have favored numerous settlements since ancient times, of which it is still possible to admire the tiny streets of the medieval era, some manor houses and a romantic harbor set in the rock.

The name derives from the Celtic Cenn in ar which means Point on the water or also from the Latin Canore or Canerum which refers to the cane thicket. The term Riviera, added only in 1947, instead refers to the Mediterranean climate, which is reflected in the lush vegetation of lemons, cedars, oranges and olive trees typical of those Italian areas.

Castles of Cannero

The Castles of Cannero represent one of the major attractions of Lake Maggiore and they are a shared heritage between Lombardy, Piedmont and Switzerland.

Ethnographic and brush museum

Particular is the origin of this museum, created on the initiative of the students and teachers of the National Intermediate School "Quasimodo" in the city, in 1981.

It was in fact the young people who collected the historical memory from the families of the town, cataloging the material on display which outlines the history and daily life of the past in Cannero.

There are also open-air paths enriched by educational panels that explore issues such as the former Brush Factory, the Church of San Giorgio Martire, the Ponte della Vittoria, the Piazzetta degli Affreschi, the Imbarcadero and others.

Citrus park

Born from a collaboration between the Municipality and the Department of Arboreal Crops of the University of Turin, the goal is the recovery of local agricultural traditions, historically linked to the cultivation of citrus fruits thanks to a favorable climate.
